Radioactivity @ 222 Hyde (Fri.) For those looking to kick start the weekend as soon as Friday happy hour hits, Radioactivity fills the early evening with lots of good tunes. At 222 Hyde, DJs Tristes Tropiques and Robots.In.Heat spin a mix of Krautrock, post-punk, cosmic, minimal synth, Italo, and other "weird and funky shit" between 6 and 9 p.m. Radioactivity is free, and it comes with a happy hour special: $8 for a pepperoni pizza and a beer.

Upcoming Things

new monthly happy hour @ 222 hyde (222 hyde st) w/ jason aka robotsinheat. drink specials and food deals. 3 turntables and a cray-zay soundsystem.

annual philly pilgrimage @ medusa lounge:

From Philadelphia CityPaper:

"So it’s the day after Christmas and your all full of cookies and candy canes and whatever other over-indulgences you’ve shoved down your throat. Your broke cuz of society’s pressure to consume excess nothingness (and ya know that recession thing people talk about). But damnit, you still want to go out to drink and dance! I’m sayin’ you could probably mosey on over to this spot for some cheap beverages plus nice sounds, and have ya self a grand ol’ time. San Francisco’s Tristes Tropiques is bringin’ his unique and moody stylings of electronic post rock dance hybrids. Hopefully he’ll bring some of that west coast warmth with him."

Get ya afternoons poppin' with some grub, dranky dranks and smooth music vibes!
w/ Tristes Tropiques, Ed Blammo, No Arms

Funky Bongo Re-bop

Re-bop yr attitude dude! Nice clap-along, sing-along road trip jam on ZE. French sounding too adds to the alluuuuure. I think this band was a downtown party band at the time?

Funky Nassau. Proto-disco. Tropical sounding since they are Bahamanian.

Incredible Bongo Band, responsible for the famous Apache sample, tearing it up here with a BONGO SOLO. Lots of reverb in the bongo room.

Boney M - Ma Baker (1976)

I've known about this song for a long time but a posting is long overdue. No idea if this video is actually from 1976 or when. CLASSIC!!!

Purple Brain

Get this.

Kano - Don't Try To Stop Me - 1981

Sweaterfunky Italo jam that I would play if I had in 2 weeks at the Li Po Lounge. June 21. 10p-2a, free! Maybe too fast for boogie-ing down though...

& Queen of Witches in Deutsche TV! Rare non-vocoded Kano track!

New Musik - While You Wait (1981)

Jam packed sampledelic dreamy italo-esque pop-leaning track. Great for a day of motoring around the countryside. My new favorite band. The LP with this track climbed all the way to #67 on the UK charts!

Sleeping Bag Sessions (2009)

RADIO RHYTHM
RADIO RHYTHM
RADIO RHYTHM
RADIO RHYTHM

Duh! Wanted to report on this a few weeks ago but never got around to it. I can write a paragraph on each song but I will restrain myself.

Namesake remixes rereleased!!!!! Without Killer Whale I am nothing.

BUY THIS NOW. PURE GENIUS.

http://www.mediafire.com/?mehltzy5ay0

1. 5 Minutes Bombing Mix (Bonzo Goes To Washington)
2. Tiger Stripes (Felix )
3. You Cant Hold Me Down (Felix)
4. Radio Rhythm (Clandestine featuring Ned Sublette)
5. Chill Pill (Sounds Of JHS 126 Brooklyn)
6. School Bell/Tree House (Indian Ocean)
7. Treehouse (Indian Ocean)
8. Go Bang! (Dinosaur L)
9. 5 Minutes Radio MiX (Bonzo Goes To Washington)
10. Radio Rhythm Dub Mix (Killer Whale)

The Glimmer Twins - Undercover of the Night (1983)

Not the Glimmers, but the Rolling Stones! What's the difference you may ask, since the Glimmers probably totally love this song...

Embedding is disabled so copy and paste for this killer video!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sthRYIB91P8

Guns, bullets, explosions, pools, fake mustaches, kidnapping etc.

Decent, but lacking in a few areas "extended mix" here:

Duh Duh Duh (2009)

I mean dardardar.org, the latest and greatest listing service for in the know shows in the Bay Area. Great handy little resource that keeps on giving week after week for those tough to find shows that happen in basements, backyards, broom closets & back alleys.

http://www.dardardar.org
http://www.myspace.com/dardardarorg

Dig? Dar? Duh?

Look for one of these cardboard collectibles at a store near you:

The Equals - Black Skin Blue Eyed Boys (1971)

The Clash covered this band with "Police On My Back". Eddie Grant is in this band, who later penned the cheesy "Electric Avenue" but also way more killer dance floor cuts. Dj Harvey's side project Map of Africa also covered this song. Need I say more? I first heard this band at Little Joy in Echo Park. I shouldn't have just revealed that. Oops. The Map of Africa version is on the 2006 Sal Principato & Kaos mix "Collectors Series" (which totally rules btw).

Sunday, March 29, 2009

The Reynolds Girls - I'd Rather Jack (1989)

One hit pop wonder from a pair of sisters. Neither here nor there. Features the classic line, "I'd rather jack, than Fleetwood Mac". Not much explanation what jack literally means. Supposed to comment on the lack of press and radio coverage of new younger acts in the UK.

Friday, March 27, 2009

JEAN MICHEL JARRE - ZOOLOOK (1984)

Frenchie new wave. What are zoo looking at? I got this dirt cheap and you should too!

Amazing track titles on the LP:

A1 Ethnicolor (11:41)
A2 Diva (7:33)
B1 Zoolook (3:50)
B2 Wooloomooloo (3:20)
B3 Zoolookologie (4:20)
B4 Blah-Blah Cafe (3:22)
B5 Ethnicolor II (3:52)

One song with Laurie Anderson vocals too!

Power Of Tower & The Killer Funk Renewable Resource Allstars Big Band - "There's Only So Much Oil In The Ground So We Better Start Looking For Alt

Extremely long winded band name and song title that accurately reflects the energy crises of the 1970s as well as the most recent incarnation which explains the March 2009 bootleg re-release of this treasure on 7" (as "Power of Tower" instead of "Tower of Power"). Local SF Bay band from Oakland released this in 1974.

Full title:
"There's Only So Much Oil In The Ground So We Better Start Looking For Alternative Power Supplies"

Saturday, March 21, 2009

The Shamen - Omega Amigo (1989)

Nice turn of the decade Scottish techno-ish nugget with some possibly regrettable vocals. I'll be honest, maybe I just like the alliterative title? The Stone Roses probably liked these guys so I will too. Classified as "indie dance" according to discogs.com. Whenever the Madchester revival dance night monthly part starts you'll be sure to hear some Shamen, right?

Dissevelt:Song of the second moon (1963)

Realy old kraut stuff mentioned in this Hungarian article:
http://www.hotdog.hu/magazin/magazin_article.hot?m_id=24138&a_id=337909&h_id=73290
along with lots of other related sounds!

Tangerine Dream - Choronzon (1981)

Another not so hard to find spacey gem from Tangerine Dream. Whoever made this wolf montage video is simply put, a genius. Take note of the wolf teeth photo set at 2:14 when the song takes a dark turn!

Logic - Clash

Pretty well known Japanese atmospheric spacey electro disco gem. Project of Hideki Matsutake, of Yellow Magic Orchestra fame.

Also "Unit", a little more vocal heavy & with a nice downtempo sway:

Black Box - Everybody Everybody (1990)

Yessssssssss! Finally I found you Black Box! You were not Chunky A's "Owww", you are your own song, Everybody Everybody, as featured in the Kid and Play smash hit, "Class Act". Nice drum break, mind blowing "owwww", ok horns, and pretty tight bassline. This song is probably in some episode of Real World NYC. Possibly a tranny anthem as well. I am so happy.

C.C.C.P. (BEATAMAX) - American Soviets (1987)

I shouldn't even be posting this but oh well here goes...nice acid-ish synth line, almost as if Egyptian Lover went to the USSR and secretly made this. Dub or instrumental version probably would work better than the vocal.

The performance:

The cover:

Not even sure what this is but one part of the video reminds me of the greasy saxophone performer at the beach concert in Lost Boys. Also makes me terrified of New York and want to move to the suburbs.

Hongkong Syndikat - Berlin (1984)

Boogie down Berlin banger from 1984 featuring Reagan samples & funky synths. Sire Records release. Later went on to release the schmalzy hit "Concrete and Clay".

George Kranz - Trommeltanz (Din Daa Daa) (1984)

Ubiquitous 80s jam, penned by German George Kranz. Even sampled by the Ying Yang twins. Number one dance hit in the US ("Hot Dance Club Play").
Contains such memorable lines as:

Rrratatatatatatata
Rrratatatatdadadadoom

Bot Da Down, D' Doom
Do Doom, Do Doom
Di Doom, Do Doom
Do Doom, Do Doom

Fleetwood Mac - World Turning (Live)

Put on your turban and hit those drums! Zip directly to 5:12. Nothing wrong with the 'mac! Thanks Brennan!

Friday, February 6, 2009

Tantra - Wishbone - Philips (1979)

Another Italo gem with a great bassline, swirly synths and drum work. Pay no attention to the video...wait, I take that back...

Friday, January 30, 2009

Post 40: Workin' & Slavin' Away

F'ing killer track with a hyper-id "uggggh" release chant repeated throughout! And a clock strikes midnight bell! Slightly italo sounding except for the sappy diva vocal disaster. Re-arrangers: message: rearrange this one to perfection! Best re-edit gets an RR feature! -Tristes Trop.

Sunday, January 25, 2009

Bunny Sigler - Super Duper Duper Super Man - Salsoul (1980)

From the LP "Let It Snow". Never released as a 12" single. Features mixing by mutant disco extraordinaire Bob Blank, lyrics about Dark Kent, an insane break (done 3 times), a mostly coherent narrative, & easy sing along chants:

I don't like kryptonite, but I like Lois Lane
I don't like kryptonite, but I like Lois Lane
I don't like kryptonite, but I like Lois Lane

Bunny Sigler - Super Duper Duper Super Man

D.C. LaRue - Confessions - Pyramid (1978)

Connecticut producer D.C. LaRue brings spacey synth disco to the masses, during a period where the genre was pretty unadventurous. Also known as the first white producer to top the charts & the man behind the first widely available disco single in 1976.

D.C. LaRue - Confessions

Saturday, January 17, 2009

Kensi-Kensu - Casanova - Baby Records (1983)

One hit wonder German duo disco-rap with an awesome video of a phone conversation taking place between Kensi and Kensu in a pink bedroom and a red phone booth. Who is Kensi and who is Kensu? Classic Eurodisco a la "Paris Latino."
